Deborah Elizabeth Burris

Deborah Elizabeth Burris, age 71, of Cambridge, passed away at her home on April 3, 2026. She was born in Cambridge on May 9, 1954, the daughter of the late Roy and Kathleen Schimmel.

Deb attended Cambridge Elementary School and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1972. She went on to earn her nursing degree from Aultman Nursing School through Kent State University in 1976. She dedicated much of her life to caring for others, working as a labor and delivery nurse at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center from 1976 to 1990, and later at Genesis from 1994 until her retirement in 2011.

Her greatest joy in life was her grandchildren, around whom her world revolved. In her younger years, Deb was a skilled swimmer and served as a lifeguard. She also shared her talents with local Boy Scouts, helping many earn their swimming badges.

Deb was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, James Burris; her parents, Roy and Kathleen Schimmel; and her sisters, Jackie Barber and Susan Gildea.

She is survived by her son, Travis (Mallory) Burris; her daughter, Sarah (James) King; her grandchildren, Isabel “Izzy” DeLong and Kyle DeLong; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A memorial celebration may be held at a later date. Donations in Deb’s memory may be made to Hospice of Guernsey, P.O. Box 1165, Cambridge, Ohio 43725.

    I am so sorry to hear of Deb’s passing. One of my all-time favorite high school friends and nurses who provided me with the necessary attention and attitude to maintain my existence during a I past Medical trauma in my life.
